The institution originated from the Waterloo College Joint College established on April 4, 1956; a semi-autonomous entity, Waterloo College, which is an affiliated University of Western Ontario, which was officially separated from Waterloo College and passed through Ontario in 1959 The Legislative Assembly passed the "University of Waterloo Act" and merged into one university. The entity was established to meet the needs of training engineers and technicians for post-war Canadian economic growth. In the next ten years, it has substantively developed, adding an art college in 1960, and establishing the School of Optometry (now the School of Optometry and Visual Sciences) in Ontario, which moved from Toronto in 1967
 
The university is a co-educational school with approximately 41,000 undergraduate and 6,900 graduate students enrolled in 2019. The school’s alumni and former students are located in Canada and more than 150 countries; many award winners, government officials and business leaders associated with Waterloo. The University of Waterloo team (called the Waterloo Warriors) participated in the University of Ontario Track and Field Conference for U Sports.
