UQAM was created on April 9, 1969, by the Quebec government, after the merger of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Montreal, and the three academies of the French Academy of Saint Mary.

In the middle of 1970, the UQAM campus began construction in the Saint-Jacques community. The old Saint-Jacques cathedral was condemned and the believers were transferred to the chapel of Notre Dame. University architect Dimitri Dimakopoulos chose to respect the plans of John Ostell and Victor Bourgeau and decided to transplant the new building onto the walls of the nave, overlooking St. Catherine Street, highlighting the bell tower and its portals. These relics are listed as historical monuments by the Quebec government. UQAM's new campus opened in September 1979.

Before the University of Quebec arrived in Montreal, the French-speaking working class had limited access to higher education. Due to the adoption of a policy that allows adults with relevant professional experience, the number of students has been expanded to include social categories that previously did not belong to higher education, thus creating an open atmosphere.

UQAM is the first university in Canada to develop faculty unionism. Since its establishment in 1970, the Union of University Professors of Quebec has been affiliated to the National Syndicate (CSN), which has been working to democratize the functions of university authorities.

In November 2006, UQAM experienced a major financial crisis. According to reports, former President Roch Denis was partially responsible for the poor financial management of the Science Park and Ilot Voyageur real estate projects. The recovery plan required by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Recreation is still in progress, creating major challenges for employees, students, lecturers and professors.

With the addition of Télé University in June 2005, UQAM has nearly 60,000 students and is the largest French-speaking university in the world. On January 13, 2012, it was announced that TELUQ would once again be separated from UQAM as a university, but it would remain in the University of Quebec system.
